Lumberjanes To Be Directed By Emily Carmichael

Russ Burlingame –

Emily Carmichael, a Harvard grad who is writing the screenplay for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, is going behind the camera for Lumberjanes, Fox’s planned adaptation of the hit BOOM! Studios comic book from Shannon Watters, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, and Brooke Allen.

The series centers on a group of girls at a summer camp who have to face down a supernatural menace.

Ross Richie and Stephen Christy are producing for BOOM!, with Adam Yoelin co-producing. Fox has a first-look deal with BOOM! Studios, allowing them the opportunity to seize on in-demand properties like Lumberjanes, an acclaimed bestseller that helped launch the current movement of creating more comics by and for women.

The series has sold over half a million books to date, and is currently in the middle of a crossover with DC’s Gotham Academy.

Prior to signing her Pacific Rim deal, Carmichael had done a number of indie projects and has been considered a rising star. Her Powerhouse, a feature film set to be distributed through Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, has Star Wars EP Simon Kinberg and Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow attached to produce. After rumors that she would direct Captain Marvel popped up, Carmichael has recently expressed on Twitter that she would like to direct Squirrel Girl with Stranger Things‘s Shannon Purser.

TheWrap broke the news that she had got the job, and shortly thereafter, Carmichael confirmed it on Twitter. The film is on the fast track at Fox with an eye toward a possible late 2017 or early 2018 release.
